Chapter 5: Beast From Water

" Meeting in the Night"

Dear Diary,

I called an assembly today because there were things that really needed to be discussed. Everyone on the island is starting to slack off and not listen to the rules. The kids are taking shorts wherever they want.  We set a designated area for a lavatory. It was perfect because the water came up and washed it clean. The little ones act without decorum though. They takes shorts by the shelter, by the fruit, even in the forest where we walk. It's ludicrous that they can't just go to the designated lavatory. I also told them that they needed to keep the fire going at all times. They all think hunting and meat are important but i don't stay here all my life hunting. I hope they understand the importance of the fire and why we need it to always be burning. They aren't being smart about it.

Other things I talked about in the assembly was how they were forgeting to put the water in cocunuts and setting them up for people to drink. They all go down to drink straight from the river. I have no problem with drinking from the river I just don't want them to start acting like savages and forgetting order. One other thing I talked about was this thing that has been most of the littluns minds. They are always frightened and i hear lamentions in the night. I brought up the topic of this "beastie" during the assembly and everyone started rambling. Even some of the older kids are starting to believe this thing exists. We asked a littlun named Percival where the beast thing came from and he said the sea. Other people started asking if it was a ghost. Piggy was convinced that this "beastie" didn't exist but I'm not so sure.

From here the assembly started to go downhill. People ignored the rules and spoke out of turn. Jack was wrestling with piggy to take the conch from him. Everyone was shouting their ideas of whether the "beastie" was real or not and what it was. Maurice said he thought it might be a squid. He said squids are miles long and swallow whales whole. They argued over that and if a squid would come out of the water. Then Jack got up and talked out of turn. He said that he didn't care about the rules and he led the whole camp away. He talked to me jeeringly and i didn't know if they respected mee as cheif. I thought that I would resign as cheif but Piggy and Simon told me that i needed to stay cheif. We'll see how things turn out tommorow.
